Day Habilitation

The Day Habilitation program will be moving to its new location (5 Ventura Drive, Dartmouth) on September 6th.

Better Community Living, Inc. has been providing day services to individuals for over two decades. Currently, our Day Habilitation Program offers individuals the chance to participate in structured group activities that will enhance the skills that are necessary to access their community. This program will enable individuals to exercise an increased level of independence in daily living activities.

Our Day Habilitation Program is staffed by an energetic group of well trained professionals that include a registered nurse, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, Speech Therapist, Behavioral Specialist and a number of Day Habilitation support paraprofessionals. Our Day Habilitation staff have years of experience in direct care, both residentially and in the community.

Program Offerings

Specific services that we offer are as follows:

Occupational Therapy: The Occupational Therapist works with individuals to enhance fine/gross motor skills and assist in other aspects of daily living. Sensory integration activities are also offered.

Speech Therapy: The Speech Therapist works with individuals on verbal communication skills, using picture books and other strategies to improve communication ability.

Registered Nursing: We have a Registered Nurse on site that is available for medical monitoring and medication administration for individuals who may need it.

Fitness and Exercise Groups: We offer walking groups in the community, as well as indoor treadmills for individuals to use for overall health and well being. We also provide a variety of aerobic exercises, light Yoga, and other workout DVD’s within our program.

Health and Nutrition Groups: Staff and our Healthcare Supervisor work with individuals on proper nutrition, eating habits and using the food pyramid. They also work with individuals on basic hygiene skills.

Social Skills Groups: A series of groups work on social aspects of life. We have groups such as arts and crafts, current events, bingo, board games and video games on the Nintendo® Wii system. A coffee social closes the week with dancing, music, coffee and snacks.

Wellspring Farm

An aspect that sets us apart from other Day Habilitation Programs is that individuals are given the opportunity to attend Wellspring Farm Learning Center, located in Rochester, MA.

Wellspring Farm Learning Center is an adventure-based therapeutic program which offers your loved one experiences that will enhance their self-esteem, confidence, coordination, physical activity, learning skills, listening skills and trust. This is done through an unrivaled combination of programs, utilizing the horse/farm environment.

In cooperation with the Better Community Living Day Habilitation Program, Wellspring Farm Learning Center will enhance your loved one’s Individualized Support Plan (ISP) utilizing methods of experimental learning.

In collaboration with Wellspring Farm Learning Center, individuals in the Better Community Living Day Habilitation Program will be included in the following:

Hippotherapy (The use of the movement of the horse as a treatment strategy in physical, occupational and speech-language therapy), Nature Awareness, Sensory Integration Programs, Behavioral Therapy and Imagination and Play Therapy.
